In depth
In a village near Kastamonu stands a small stone mosque with a forest of painted wood inside. A private Kastamonu day trip takes you there from Safranbolu, with a guide and lunch in town.
The Mosque on the Kastamonu Day Trip
Kasaba
First, your driver takes you to the village of Kasaba, less than 20 km from Kastamonu. Here, the Mahmut Bey Mosque was built in 1366, under the Candaroğulları.
Painted wood
Its outer walls are of rubble stone, but the inside is almost all wood. Every wooden surface is painted with root dyes, and the roof was built in an overlapping technique without any metal parts or nails.
The Door on the Kastamonu Day Trip
A World Heritage Site
In 2023, the mosque joined the World Heritage List with four other wooden mosques of medieval Anatolia. After your visit, you have lunch in Kastamonu, paid on the spot.
The carved door
Then you see the mosque’s original carved door, kept in the Kastamonu Ethnography Museum, while a copy now hangs in the village. From the ethnography museum, we drive you back to Safranbolu. For the old town there, see our Safranbolu tour. Also from Safranbolu, our Amasra day trip reaches the Black Sea for a castle on the rocks and fish by the harbor.
From our guides
- Siyez bulgurMade from einkorn, an ancient wheat still grown around İhsangazi, and cracked in stone mills, it has been a registered appellation of origin since 2019.
Our suggestion Inside the Mahmut Bey Mosque, ask before you photograph, and never use a flash on the painted wood.
Good to Know on the Kastamonu Day Trip
The mosque’s original door was carved by Abdullah, a craftsman from Ankara. In the mosque, plaster appears only around the mihrab; everything else inside is wood. It is a working mosque, so we plan the visit outside prayer times.
Our Black Sea guide has more of the region. Would you like to see the painted mosque of Kasaba? The painted wood and the carved door of Kasaba are an easy day from Kastamonu; name yours and we will set it up.
