The 5 Best Hotels in Sultanahmet and the Old City
The best hotels in Sultanahmet, our five MICHELIN-listed picks: Four Seasons at Sultanahmet, AJWA, Regie Ottoman, Orientbank and Amiral Palace, steps from the great sights.
The best hotels in Sultanahmet and the old city put you within walking distance of Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar. Our five picks range from a former prison that holds three MICHELIN Keys to the old headquarters of the Ottoman tobacco monopoly in Sirkeci. In the old city, the building and the walk to the sights decided our list. With your own guide, a Grand Bazaar tour goes behind the shop fronts to the stone halls and workshops.
How We Chose the Best Hotels in Sultanahmet
All five appear in the MICHELIN Guide’s Istanbul hotel selection, and two of them hold MICHELIN Keys. Then we kept only hotels on the historic peninsula, in Sultanahmet, Cankurtaran and Sirkeci. İbrahim Pasha already appears in our best hotels in Istanbul, so it does not repeat here.

The Best Hotels in Sultanahmet With MICHELIN Keys
1. Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet

The Four Seasons at Sultanahmet fills a former jail with a lemon-yellow neoclassical facade, arches and columns. Inside, carpets, antiques and Ottoman tapestries sit with ochre stone, tiled tables and floors inlaid with Turkish patterns. Because it has about 65 rooms, it stays small and personal. Also, it holds three MICHELIN Keys, so it suits a once-in-a-lifetime stay.
2. AJWA Sultanahmet
AJWA Sultanahmet opened in 2017 and reflects the culture of its Azerbaijani owners. Inside, for example, its 61 rooms pair traditional latticework and geometric patterns with modern comforts such as underfloor heating. Because the hotel rises above its neighbors, many rooms look over the city. Also, Zeferan, the rooftop restaurant, serves Azerbaijani cuisine, and the hotel has its own hammam. It holds one MICHELIN Key.

3. Regie Ottoman Hotel, Sirkeci

Regie Ottoman fills the former headquarters of the Reji, the company that collected the Ottoman state’s taxes on tobacco, salt and alcohol from 1883. However, the conversion leaves the Ottoman-era architecture largely intact, with minimalist interiors and 34 rooms. Then, for dinner, Ocak serves Anatolian cooking over an open fire. Also, Brasserie Roi on the ground floor focuses on boutique Turkish wines and rakı (an anise-flavored spirit, usually drunk with water and ice). Nearby in Bahçekapı, the confectioner Hafız Mustafa has been in business since 1864.
4. Orientbank Hotel, Sirkeci

Orientbank opened in 1912 and keeps its original facade, a copper dome over the terrace, a marble spiral staircase and a wooden revolving door. Inside, its 36 rooms add Art Deco touches, and a Jazz Bar nods to the 1920s. Still, the service is modern: you can reach your butler by WhatsApp. From the viewing terrace, you look out over the city.
5. Amiral Palace Hotel, Cankurtaran
Amiral Palace sits near the edge of the peninsula in Cankurtaran, behind an unusual Western-style facade. Inside, its 51 rooms are classic, so you find moldings and chandeliers, and a few have sea views. Then the rooftop restaurant looks over the Sea of Marmara. For a slow afternoon, the spa has a small pool, a sauna, a steam room and a Turkish bath.
