The 5 Best Boutique Hotels in Galata and Karaköy

The best boutique hotels in Galata and Karaköy, our five MICHELIN-listed picks: Ecole St. Pierre, The Bank, The Galata MGallery, 10 Karaköy and Georges Hotel Galata.

The best boutique hotels in Galata and Karaköy fill old banks, schools and merchants’ buildings in Istanbul’s liveliest district. Our five picks range from a 17-room hotel in a 19th-century school below the Galata Tower to a bank on Bankalar Caddesi with a rooftop bar. The old building behind each one mattered most to us, then the street it stands on. To explore the quarter by day, see our Beyoğlu tour.

How We Chose the Best Boutique Hotels in Galata and Karaköy

All five appear in the MICHELIN Guide’s Istanbul hotel selection, and two of them hold a MICHELIN Key. Then we kept only hotels in Galata and Karaköy, the old port and banking quarter across the Golden Horn from the old city. From here, the Galata Tower, the ferries and the old city are all close by.

The Best Boutique Hotels in Galata and Karaköy in Historic Buildings

1. Ecole St. Pierre Hotel, Galata

Ecole St. Pierre fills the former Collège des Frères St. Pierre, a school that ran from 1842 to 1935, and it keeps parts of the old Genoese walls. Inside, for example, its 17 rooms were once classrooms, and each one carries an abacus. Then the restaurant, Il Cortile, sits in the old refectory, opening onto a leafy courtyard. Although there is no gym or spa, the service feels personal. It holds one MICHELIN Key and rewards a slow stay.

2. The Bank Hotel Istanbul, Karaköy

The Bank sits in a classic bank building on Bankalar Caddesi, the street of the old banks. Also, a local architect and designer created its 63 rooms, and the upper floors look over the city. Then an in-house curator shows local art, and there is a spa as well. On the sixth floor, Serica serves modern Turkish cooking with a view over Sultanahmet, and the roof bar above suits a sunset drink. It holds one MICHELIN Key.

3. The Galata Istanbul, MGallery

The Galata fills Baltazzi Han, a neoclassical landmark from 1836 that later served as a bank headquarters. Since its restoration, its 83 rooms mix several eras, with Art Deco to the fore. The suites look across the water toward the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, or back to the Galata Tower. Also, the spa includes the historic Çeşme bath, with about 300 years of history on the site.

4. 10 Karaköy

10 Karaköy fills a neoclassical building, which the architect Sinan Kafadar reimagined, with Ottoman-influenced design and his own furniture. Its suites and penthouse are the most lavish rooms. Then, on the roof, ON10 looks out over the Bosphorus and the city all around. For breakfast and evenings, Brasserie Ten and the Kupaj Lounge are on site.

5. Georges Hotel Galata

Georges, a stylishly refurbished guest house, has 20 rooms in the heart of Galata. Also, many rooms have private balconies toward the Bosphorus, and a roof terrace shares the same view. Inside, down duvets, good soundproofing and rain showers come as standard, and a butler helps with the rest. Think of it as a stylish, smaller stay close to the district’s restaurants and nightlife.
