Four Seasons Bosphorus

A hotel on the European shore of the Bosphorus, built around the 19th-century Atik Pasha palace in Beşiktaş and open since June 2008.

Overview

Four Seasons Bosphorus is a hotel in a 19th-century Ottoman palace on the European shore of the strait. Its full name is Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus, and it stands in Beşiktaş. The old building is known as the Atik Pasha palace. After years of other uses, Four Seasons converted it and opened the hotel in June 2008. Today, it has 170 rooms, and 25 of them are suites. Its address is Çırağan Caddesi 28, so it shares a coast road with Çırağan Palace.

The Building and Its History

The Atik Pasha palace

The building began as a secondary residence. It stood near the sultan's main summer palace on the Bosphorus. It was one of the Feriye palaces of Çırağan Palace, which spread over a wide area. The building counts among the Bosphorus yalı mansions as well, the waterside houses of the strait.

A cable depot, then a guesthouse

The building had hard years in the 20th century. For many years, the state electricity company TEK used it as a cable depot. While it served as a depot, workers took out the original wooden floors. Then a reinforced-concrete frame went in behind the outer walls. In the 1980s, work began to turn it into a state guesthouse. Some columns came out, steel frames went in, and a new attic added extra rooms.

The 2008 conversion of Four Seasons Bosphorus

After that, the Treasury leased the land for 49 years to a company that would build and run a hotel. New buildings rose in the garden, while precast pieces restored the facade. The architect was TAM, Turgut Alton Mimarlık, and Metex Design Group designed the interiors. The hotel opened its doors in June 2008.

Where Four Seasons Bosphorus Sits

The hotel stands right on the water, on the European shore. It lies in Yıldız, a quarter of Beşiktaş. Along the same road, at number 32, stands Çırağan Palace, now a hotel too. For the villages and palaces farther along the shore, read our Bosphorus guide.

The waterfront pool at Four Seasons Bosphorus

The pool sits at the water's edge, while the historic building rises behind it. It is mainly for hotel guests, so ask the hotel about outside access before you go. In all, the hotel has two pools and a spa of 2,100 square meters (22,605 square feet). The spa has 10 treatment rooms.

Who Four Seasons Bosphorus Suits

We suggest it for special occasions, honeymoons and milestone trips. The mood is understated luxury on the water. Because it has 170 rooms, it is smaller than its neighbor Çırağan, which has 317. The site mixes the old palace with newer garden buildings. So if you want to sleep in the historic part, ask the hotel which rooms are inside it. For other historic stays in the city, see our guide on where to stay in Istanbul.

Staying at Four Seasons Bosphorus

The hotel has four places to eat and drink. They are AQUA, Yalı (a waterfront mansion on the Bosphorus) & The Bar, Ocakbaşı and the Assouline Lounge. We book your room at the Four Seasons Bosphorus and plan dinner by the water.
