A small Urla winery founded by Serpil Erdurak, named after the philosopher Anaxagoras of nearby Klazomenai, growing Foça Karası and Bornova Misketi beside international grapes.
USCA is a small winery among the vines of Kuşçular, a village of Urla on the peninsula west of İzmir. Serpil Erdurak founded it, and as a woman producer, she has tended vines here for more than twenty years. The vineyards hold an organic farming certificate, and the winery makes about 40,000 bottles a year.
The name comes from Anaxagoras, the philosopher born in nearby Klazomenai. He taught that a mind, nous, gives order to the world, and in Turkish that word is written "us". So the winery carries a thinker of the same coast in its name.
Serpil Erdurak, a law graduate, bought her first vineyard in Payamlı, near İzmir, in 2002. Then, a year later, she planted vines at Kocadağ in Urla, and trial wines followed in 2006. In 2010, she bought the land in Kuşçular where the winery stands today. The first harvest under the USCA name came in 2012, and the first four wines were bottled in 2013.
Today, three vineyards run from sea level up to about 400 meters (1,300 feet), on clay and limestone soil. The wind hardly stops all year on the peninsula. The winery works with nine grapes. Five are international, from Cabernet Sauvignon to Viognier. However, the other four are local: Foça Karası, Öküzgözü, Urla Karası and Bornova Misketi. In the cellar, the wine moves by gravity, and fermentation runs cold.
Every day, by reservation, the winery's wine expert leads three kinds of tasting. For example, the Classic one pours four wines, and the Premium one pours six. Finally, the Cellar tasting, for a small group, takes place among the barrels. Each one walks you from the harvest to the bottle, with tasting notes and ideas for food. The tasting room is for guests over 18.

We suggest it for an afternoon in Urla after the ruins of Klazomenai and a long lunch. It also suits wine lovers who want to taste rare local grapes such as Foça Karası.
Our Urla wine tour tastes at two wineries of the Urla Vineyard Route. Tell us if you want USCA to be one of them, and we will book the tasting. Its neighbor in Kuşçular, Çakır, shares the day with it in our guide to wineries to visit in Urla.
