A Turkish barber experience is one of the small pleasures of Istanbul, and it is easy to miss without a local beside you. We arrange a neighborhood barber for your date, and your own guide walks you there and translates in the chair. You get the hot towel and the straight razor, then time to wander the streets around the shop.

In depth
The towel comes first, hot enough to make you sigh. Then the razor starts at your cheek, and for a while nobody in the shop needs anything from you. That is the Turkish barber experience, and in Istanbul it is an easy hour to add to your trip, as long as someone local takes you there.
The Chair and the Razor
We arrange a neighborhood barber for your date, and your own guide walks you in and translates. The barber softens your beard with a hot towel, then shaves you with a straight razor. Do you want a haircut or a trim as well? Your guide tells the barber just how you like it.
A Trade with a Long Memory
Istanbul barbers have gone by the word berber since the 16th century; before that, Ottoman sources called them halik or ser-teraş. Some kept a shop, and others carried their tools from street to street. They did far more than shave. The same hands might also pull a tooth, apply leeches or draw blood by cupping, so your guide has stories to tell while the towel cools.
After Your Turkish Barber Experience
Then you walk the streets around the shop with your guide and stop for a glass of tea. Since this is a private half day, we pick the neighborhood with you and confirm the time and the shop when you book. It also fits as an optional stop on a longer walk, such as our Beyoğlu and Galata tour or our Kuzguncuk walk.
For a different kind of Ottoman cleansing, see our Istanbul hammam experience. So how do you like your beard? Tell us, along with your dates, and we find the chair for it.
