Cağaloğlu Hamam
An Ottoman Baroque bath of 1741, built to fund a library, with its marble halls still in use.
Overview
Just up the hill from Hagia Sophia, on a busy street of Cağaloğlu, a carved marble doorway opens between two ordinary buildings. Step inside, and the noise drops away. Calligraphy hangs above a door, marble gleams, and the warm air smells of soap. For almost three centuries, this bath has welcomed visitors in the heart of the old city. This is the Cağaloğlu Hamam (a Turkish bath).
- Good for

A Bath That Paid for a Library
The Cağaloğlu Hamam was finished in 1741, near the end of the great age of Ottoman bath building. It was built late in the Ottoman age of great baths. Its purpose was practical: the income from the bath paid for the library that Sultan Mahmud I had founded inside Hagia Sophia.
Ottoman Baroque details
The architect Süleyman Ağa began the building, and Abdullah Ağa completed it. Like most city baths, it is a double hamam, with separate sections for men and women. The plan follows the old tradition, but the details show the new Ottoman Baroque taste of the 18th century.
The Guest Book of the Cağaloğlu Hamam
Few baths anywhere can match its list of visitors. Over the years, Florence Nightingale, Atatürk, King Edward VIII of Britain and Kaiser Wilhelm II all came here. So did the ballet star Rudolf Nureyev, the Turkish rock singer Barış Manço, the actors Harrison Ford and John Travolta, and the model Kate Moss. Today, most of its guests are travelers.

What to Expect
The ritual
First, you change and wrap yourself in a peştemal, the thin cotton cloth of the bath. You rest on the warm marble of the hot room until you sweat. An attendant scrubs you with a rough mitt and washes you in a cloud of soap foam. You cool down and rest in the changing hall. Between the domes of the same building, Lokanta 1741 cooks contemporary Turkish food listed in the MICHELIN Guide.
Inside the Cağaloğlu Hamam: Two Doors and Eight Columns
The men’s entrance opens from the main road, Prof. Kazım İsmail Gürkan Caddesi, between two marble columns with stalactite capitals. Because the street was raised over the centuries, you now go down ten steps to reach it. The women’s door is around the corner, on a side street called Hamam Sokağı. In the men’s changing hall, a pool with a water jet stands in the middle, under a large dome with a lantern at the top. In the hot room, eight arches on eight marble columns carry the dome over the marble navel stone, with private cubicles in the four corners.
