Faralya

A mountain village of Fethiye on the Lycian Way, high above Butterfly Valley, where the trail heads down to the bay of Kabak.

Overview

Faralya is a mountain village of Fethiye, also known as Uzunyurt, on the road that climbs along the cliffs beyond Ölüdeniz. It stands right above Butterfly Valley, and from its terraces you look straight down the canyon to the sea. The Lycian Way also runs through the village, so walkers set off from here toward the bay of Kabak. We drive you to Faralya and walk the trail with you.

Quick facts

  • Location: Fethiye, Muğla, above Butterfly Valley
  • Also known as: Uzunyurt
  • Trail: on the Lycian Way, on the stage to Kabak
  • Best combined with: Kabak, Butterfly Valley by boat, Ölüdeniz

Faralya on the Lycian Way

From Faralya down to Kabak

The Lycian Way is the long waymarked footpath along the coast of ancient Lycia, from Fethiye to Antalya. Kate Clow designed and marked it in 1999, and it starts at Ölüdeniz. From the village, the next stage begins with a climb and then runs through pine forest until it reaches the bay of Kabak. There, walkers stop for a break and a swim, before the trail climbs on toward Alınca.

For one day on this stretch, join our Lycian Way hike, which starts in Faralya. Our Lycian Way trek passes through the village on its first day, from Ovacık down to Kabak.

What to See in Faralya

Butterfly Valley below Faralya

The village sits on the rim of the canyon, and Butterfly Valley opens below it. From the terraces of the village houses, you see the whole canyon down to its beach and the deep blue bay. The valley is reached by boat, and we arrange the boat for you from Ölüdeniz on our Butterfly Valley boat tour.

The bay of Kabak

From the village, a path leads down through the pines to Kabak. A green valley falls to a small bay there, and walkers on the Lycian Way stop for a swim. Then you walk back up to Faralya, where your car waits.

Staying in Faralya

In Faralya, Melisa Pansiyon is a five-room village house run by Mehmet Köle, who was born in Faralya, and Elisabeth. Breakfast and meals come from their own garden and from produce grown in the village, and the terrace looks down over Butterfly Valley. A night in Faralya also puts you right on the trail for an early start.

Visiting Faralya

Getting there

The village lies on the coast road beyond Ölüdeniz, above the cliffs. So we pick you up at your hotel in Fethiye or Ölüdeniz and drive you up by car, and the driver waits while you walk.

Before you go

Wear good walking shoes, because the trail from Faralya climbs and drops steeply. Bring a swimsuit for Kabak, and carry water for the climb back up.

Our notes for Faralya

  • Melisa PansiyonA five-room family house with a terrace over Butterfly Valley; meals come from its own garden and the village.
  • KabakThe bay at the end of the walk down through the pines, for a swim.
  • Lycian WayThe stage toward Kabak and Alınca starts in the village.
  • Butterfly ValleyBelow the village; we take you there by boat from Ölüdeniz.

Our suggestion Spend a night at Melisa Pansiyon, have breakfast on the terrace above the valley, then walk down to Kabak for a swim before we drive you back.
