Nature & Wildlife Pamukkale, Denizli · Thermal village 37.97° N · 29.10° E

Karahayıt

A spa village near Pamukkale where red thermal water and mud rise all year at 58 °C and color the travertine red, green and white.

Overview

Karahayıt is a spa village in the Pamukkale area of Denizli, known for its red thermal water. Its main spring runs in every season, and the water and mud come out at 58 °C (136 °F). Where the water spreads over the ground, it leaves layers of red, green and white travertine. By contrast, up the road, the white terraces of Pamukkale & Hierapolis are made of the same kind of stone in another color.

Where Karahayıt lies

From Denizli, the main road runs 15 km (9 miles) to Pamukkale. There, a side road branches west and reaches the village after 7 km (4 miles). In 1990, Turkey declared the Pamukkale area a Special Environmental Protection Area. It takes in this village together with Pamukkale village, Akköy, Develi and Yeniköy.

The Red Springs of Karahayıt

Why the water runs red

Around Pamukkale, 17 hot springs rise at the foot of Çökelez Dağı, and their water builds the travertine. The springs of Karahayıt lie on the northwest side of the fault zone. Because their temperature and chemistry differ, they leave red stone instead of white. This is because the water is rich in iron, and as it settles, metal oxides stain the rock.

Around the main spring, the colored stone covers about 500 m² (5,400 square feet). Its layers turn red, green or white, depending on the oxides in the water.
