An 1830s neighborhood bath in Beyoğlu's antique quarter, restored for eleven years and reopened as a hamam where couples and friends bathe together.
Çukurcuma Hamam (a Turkish bath) is a 19th-century Turkish bath in Çukurcuma, the antique quarter of Beyoğlu in Istanbul. It was built in the 1830s and served the neighborhood for generations. In 2007 it closed for restoration, and in 2018 it reopened under the name Çukurcuma Hamamı 1831. Today it is a mixed hamam, where couples and friends bathe together.
The bath is on Çukurcuma Caddesi, the street of antique shops below Cihangir.
Quick facts
The bath went up in the 1830s, in the reign of Sultan Mahmud II. People first called it the Sürahi Hamamı, and later the Süreyya, a name still written on its façade. It served men and women at different hours. In the 1960s it passed to a new owner, Yusuf Yılmaz Bey from Tokat, who kept its old rooms as they were.
New owners bought the bath in 2007 and closed it for restoration. Eleven years later, in 2018, it opened again as Çukurcuma Hamamı 1831 as a mixed hamam.

The heart of the bath is the hot room under its round dome. In the middle lies the göbek taşı, the heated marble platform where you rest and are scrubbed. Small private chambers, the halvet rooms, open around it. Wooden changing rooms stand on a mezzanine.
The hamam is a mixed bath, so women and men share the hot room. Massages take place in private rooms. Guests from 12 to 17 can come with a parent or guardian. You choose your ritual when you book, and the bath recommends booking ahead, above all for weekends. The same owners also run the Hammamhane hotel. We book your ritual at Çukurcuma Hamam.
