A restored building on Çukurcuma Caddesi with twenty-three apartment-style rooms, next door to a neighborhood hamam built in 1831.
Hammamhane Hotel is a small hotel in a restored building on Çukurcuma Caddesi, in the antique quarter of Beyoğlu. It has twenty-three rooms spread over three buildings, and most of them work like small apartments. Its name points to its neighbor: a working hamam (a Turkish bath), built in 1831, stands next door on the same street.
When restoration began in 2012, the building was dark and covered in ivy. The team kept the original details wherever they could and gave the old walls a new steel frame inside. Finally, in 2014 the hotel opened its doors. Inside, old brick sits next to plain modern furniture, so you can still read the age of the house.
The Çukurcuma Hamamı 1831 takes its name from the year it was built. However, it is a neighborhood bath, not a hotel spa. At the center of the hot room lies the göbektaşı, the heated marble platform where the scrub and foam wash begins. It is only a few steps from the hotel door.

The rooms range from a patio room of 22 square meters (237 square feet) to duplex and terrace suites of 50 square meters (538 square feet). Most have a full kitchen, a dishwasher and a washer and dryer, so a longer stay in Cihangir and Çukurcuma feels like living in the neighborhood. In the morning, breakfast comes from local producers on a short menu that changes with the season, with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free choices. In the evening, the bar opens.
From the door, Galata Tower is about a 17-minute walk. For Hagia Sophia, the tram from Tophane to Gülhane takes about 15 minutes.
We suggest it for couples, families and travelers on a longer stay who want an apartment with a kitchen in old Beyoğlu. It also suits anyone who wants a hamam at the end of a day of walking.
Our Istanbul antiques and vintage tour walks down from Cihangir into Çukurcuma, past the hotel's street, to its antique shops and the Museum of Innocence.
